Clinical Assistant/Clinical Associate Professor of Popular Music Voice (Arizona State University)


The School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional industry professional and experienced teacher to join our faculty in the popular music program. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise as a popular music singer. This is a full-time, clinical appointment at the rank of assistant or associate, depending on experience, beginning fall 2024. This faculty member will teach on the downtown Phoenix Campus.

The Popular Music concentration in the Bachelor of Arts in Music welcomes and accommodates 21st century musicians interested in popular music and music industry studies and entrepreneurship. We welcome singers and songwriters, laptop performers or composers, DJs, producers, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, MCs, and other instrumentalists and vocalists whose musical practices and playing styles

are representative of varied popular music idioms, as well as music production, audio recording, and music industry specialists. All students gain a working knowledge of the music industry, music business and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to gain meaningful employment upon graduation. Students participate in individual applied study in a chosen specialization and a variety of group performance and production opportunities. Internships associated with specialization courses provide opportunities for students to apply their learning in a real-life context. A capstone course allows students to further develop original work in their chosen area of emphasis. We seek an innovative and creative performing artist who will participate in and further our effort to reimagine what arts education means in the 21st century. The Clinical Assistant/Clinical Associate Professor of Popular Music Voice will teach applied voice lessons and popular music ensembles as well as courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise within the industry. Special consideration will be given to those with experience teaching courses related to songwriting. The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to instruct at the undergraduate level, both in- person and online, and to recruit students regionally, nationally and internationally. The candidate may maintain a portfolio of creative activity (i.e. performance) and/or research commensurate with a clinical- track position and will be expected to mentor students, participate in recruitment activities and work effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to advance the mission of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre and the popular music program. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in music or a related field, or equivalent experience in popular music singing that includes professional performance. A graduate degree is required for international candidates.

  • Industry credits with demonstrated national experience and success as a singer.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or mentorship in relation to applied vocal instruction.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications: Candidates should provide evidence of demonstrated ability in one or more of these areas:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching voice at the college level.

  • Demonstrated excellence in the craft of songwriting as demonstrated through published commercial recordings, in both individual and collaborative settings.

  • Evidence of having worked in or held leadership positions in the music industry, in ensemble and/or in band settings.

  • Evidence of multidisciplinary performances and creative programming.

  • Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs, including online, in-person and hybrid courses including topics in vocal pedagogy, singing and songwriting.

  • The ability to advance innovative teaching practices and envision new paradigms of arts education.

  • The ability to work and collaborate across the arts and design disciplines of the Herberger Institute and with people outside the arts, across the ASU campuses, and in the community.

  • The ability to attract students, partnerships, resources, donors, grants or other sources of support to advance the mission of the popular music program; the School of Music, Dance and Theatre and the Herberger Institute.
